In times of change, most leaders rush to strategy. They roll out a new plan, restructure teams, or launch an initiative, believing the right system will solve the problem. But here’s the truth: if your team doesn’t trust you, even the best strategy will fail.
People don’t follow plans. They follow leaders.
A beautifully crafted plan can look impressive. But without trust, here’s what happens:
Team members hesitate instead of acting boldly.
Ideas stay unspoken because people fear judgment.
Rumors fill the silence when communication isn’t clear.
Trust is not a “soft skill”—it’s the foundation that determines whether strategy succeeds or stalls.
Evergreen Leaders understand that trust is the soil where strategy grows. They don’t treat it as a one-time speech or a morale booster; they see it as a daily investment.
They build trust through three key practices:
Consistency. Do what you say you’ll do. Reliability builds safety.
Clarity. Communicate decisions clearly, and explain the “why.”
Care. Value people for who they are, not just what they produce.
When these three show up daily, teams feel secure enough to innovate, adapt, and commit to the vision.
One organization I observed faced a major restructuring. The leader could have rolled out the strategy with charts and timelines. Instead, she began by addressing her people’s fears directly. She held open forums, shared what she knew—and admitted what she didn’t—and invited questions.
Her honesty didn’t solve every problem overnight, but it built credibility. The team leaned in because they trusted her, even in uncertainty. As a result, the restructuring wasn’t just tolerated—it was embraced.
1. Communicate the Why. This week, explain the reasoning behind one decision. Instead of “Do this,” say, “Here’s why this matters.”
2. Make and Keep a Small Promise. Trust is built by keeping commitments, even small ones. Choose one promise you can fulfill consistently.
3. Show Genuine Care. Ask one team member how they’re doing—beyond work. Listen with no agenda.
Do my team members believe my words, or do they wait to see if my actions align?
Where have I unintentionally damaged trust, and how can I rebuild it?
Evergreen Leaders know that trust is not an accessory—it’s the engine. Build trust first, and strategy will not only be heard, it will be acted on.
